Top Video Game Themes: Honorable Mentions

Now that the Top 25 Video Game Themes have been revealed, I thought it would be fair to highlight some of the other entries and reader submissions that made an honest bid for inclusion on the list. Again, there were a lot of Final Fantasy tracks mentioned, but we all know there’s more to gaming than Final Fantasy. So again, you’ll have to wait for a FF-exclusive edition in the future for your full Nobuo Uematsu fix.

Anyways, below, you’ll a list a 15 tracks that definitely caught my ear, just as much as they did yours. The list is presented in no particular order, though songs from the same game/franchise are grouped together just to be neat. I highly encourage you to seek these cuts out, listen to them, “buy” ’em, put ’em on your iPods and iPhones and jam hard until your ears bleed. Well, maybe not until your ears bleed…

Honorable Mention

“Zelda’s Lullaby” – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Top 25 Video Game Themes

Last week, I put out a call for all you GONG readers out there to submit your favorite tunes from the video games we all know and adore. You responded (most all of you via Facebook), and I would like to say to express to each of you my thanks. Thank you for participating and for opening my ears to sounds even I had yet to hear.

The list of tracks submitted was long and full of great songs from great games, old school and new. And accordingly, this list – the Top 25 Video Game Themes – spans the whole spectrum. We’ve got music from the biggest franchises and the hottest games spanning nearly every genre. The list includes every style, from 8-bit wonders to full orchestrated masterpieces. Indeed, out of the top 10, 5 were a direct result of your submissions, so, again, thanks to everyone that submitted tracks because you helped me out on this one more than you know.

Before I reveal the list after the jump, I want to let you all know that you needed worry or be saddened if your submission didn’t make the cut. Decisions had to made and cuts needed to be had in order to make a fair list – which I hope I’ve done. Regardless, later this week, expect a list of the Honorable Mentions: the tracks that were in great contention for a spot on the final roster but just didn’t make the final cut. Also, I hope to do justice to one particular series that just dominated the submissions. Look for a Top X Final Fantasy Music devoted to just to the FF submissions, as well as an accompanying Top 5 Final Fantasy Games. Prepare for controversy…

Now, without any further time wastings… I present to you… GONG’s Top X…

The Fantasy Dies Again

If you haven’t seen this, shame on you.

The brainchild of Monty Oum, the Dead Fantasy series pits the iconic heroines of Final Fantasy (Yuna, Rikku, Tifa, Rinoa, and one other special guest) against the sexy divas of the Dead or Alive franchise (Kasumi, Ayane, Hitomi, and a special guest of their own). To date, Dead Fantasy I and II are the only parts of this ongoing fan project. However, the end of part II leaves the door wide open (read: promises) a sequel. Actually, a series of sequels.

Well, it’s been awhile since Mr. Oum graced us all with DFII. Now, the wait may finally be over. Guests at several anime/comic/geek/etc. conventions this season have been treated to a glimpse of unfinished footage from the upcoming Dead Fanatsy III and IV (and possibly V). These new shorts pack more intricate choreography, more devastating blows, more use of character powers/abilities, more fan service, more story, and even more characters. There also seems to be hints that combatants may not just be bested in battle, but killed altogether.

If no one else is excited about this, I certainly am. Especially DFIV – one word for you… Aeons…

The Fantasy Dies agin, next month. Maybe. The summer… hopfully…

Sometime…

And on the 10th year, Red stood upon Mt. Silver once again… And waited.

Once upon a time, there were two games called Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver. Now, these two games were amazing and everyone showered them with praise.

Then, the dark times came. Pokemon became terrible. Girls couldn’t be competent trainers; Pokemon looked like reject Digimon; there were WAY too many Legendaries. But then, a ray of light came in the for of the reincarnated forms of Pokemon Red and Pokemon Green. They blessed the children of the dark age and there coming fortold of the coming of thier children: Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver.

Now, the time for these two shining children to retun to us has finally happened:

That’s right, folks! Pokemon Gold and Silver are getting remakes on the DS/DSi!

Dubbed “Pokemon Heart Gold” and “Pokemon Soul Silver”, the epic, two country spanning masterpiece will be hitting Japan’s store shelves close too, if not on the 10th anniversary of release of the original Gold and Silver. This will most likely mean that when it comes to America, it will be release on our 10th year Anniversary date.

Thanks/Shootouts go to Bulbapedia and Nintendo JP for the source.
